In 1996 Aleshia Wall gave birth to her second child, Mason Tibbs. Mason was a perfectly healthy child at birth, but after an emergency surgery at four months, Mason's – and Aleshia's – life was changed forever. To this day, no one has been able to explain what happened to Mason during the surgery; he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at age five, but even that diagnosis is uncertain. Aleshia now lives in government housing in Bowling Green, Ky., where caring for eight-year-old Mason and her ten-year-old son Andrew has become her full-time job.

Mason Tibbs's disability prevents him from interacting with his fellow students during a class period in the school library at Bristow Elementary School in Warren County, Ky. He generally spends all but two class periods in the special education classroom. During the other two periods, mason joins his fellow third-graders for their regular classes.
